Gremlins 3, spec script underway.

I’ve returned to an old spec script I was writing a few years back. It’s a spec script for GREMLINS 3. Not to mention, I am a fanatic with the Gremlins world.

I’m dabbling just a little more into the potential mythology of these little guys (but still keeping them a complete mystery, that’s half the charm!), and a few very iconic scenes, one with a Gremlin on board the International Space Station! The mayhem affects more than just a city, having these guys exposed to bigger scenarios means an even bigger idea and I think the third film should illustrate that.

The story does not focus on Billy nor Kate, but a new group of people who become just as loveable, including Billy and Kate’s teenage son, Zack, who is constantly getting bullied in the school system and not in a light way. Billy and Kate are in it, but are not central to the story (Maybe after all this time, they are going through an awful divorce, people do change). They will provide a rooted connection and familiarity to the original, but the focus is on a few other characters, Zack being one of them. The grandson of the old Chinese antique dealer Mr. Wing also plays an important role in Gizmo’s new life and has taken over the family Chinese antique business. (The kid grandson from the first film that first gave Billy’s father the exact “rules” to follow).

On the other hand, some of the scenes my team and I have been writing are full of heart; especially a scene involving the NASA Kennedy Space Center during magic hour with Gizmo and a new Mogwai.

Could Gizmo have a lost, older, slightly larger/stronger more agile brother still hiding in the mountains? Imagine if he did, what would happen if the two met under coincidental circumstances? What if the Mogwai’s actually had some sort of light, gentle telepathy ability? What if the things they learn, stay with them, even genetically? With some specific current affairs happening in our world today, what would it be like with Gremlins? People are using smart phones to capture everything; the mayhem could not be contained!

We are exploring some of this stuff and we can’t thank the creators of this universe enough for providing us with such an awesome outlet to explore our ideas. Writing is never a waste.

Thanks to Twitch Film for posting a clip from In the House of Flies, this is super rad and they’ve been supporting our films since our last film If a Tree Falls had it’s world premiere at Fantasia 2012. Well, here it is. The trailer for IN THE HOUSE OF FLIES, starring Ryan Kotack, Lindsay Smith, Henry Rollins and Ryan Barrett. We had a blast making this and I’m sure I’ll have a million more things to say when it hits the festival circuit. Can’t thank you enough for the support. Cheers!
